Secretary of State Announces Key Deadlines for the 2026 Primary and General Elections
LOS SANTOS, SAN ANDREAS — The Office of the Secretary of State today announced important filing deadlines and election administration dates for candidates, petition committees, county clerks, and voters participating in the 2026 election cycle.
Secretary of State Heidi Smith reminded prospective candidates and initiative sponsors that statutory deadlines are firm and that timely submission is required to ensure ballot access and certification.
All candidates seeking placement on the 2026 primary election ballot through petition must submit completed petition signatures no later than:

Petitions received after this deadline will not be accepted.
All petition signatures for citizen initiatives proposed for placement on the 2026 general election ballot must be submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office by:

Initiative submissions must meet all statutory verification requirements prior to certification.
The 2026 Primary Election period will occur between:

Individual counties may select their election date within this window pursuant to state law.
The deadline for the General Assembly to refer measures to the statewide ballot is:

Measures approved after this date will not appear on the November 2026 general election ballot.
County Clerks are required to submit draft ballots to the Secretary of State for certification of ballot order no later than three (3) weeks prior to their scheduled election date.
This review ensures uniform ballot formatting, compliance with election law, and accurate ordering of candidates and measures statewide.
